What is the role of 2D Floor plan in house design?

A floor plan, in general, is a diagram to the scale to depict a room or building space including fundamental elements in house interiors namely walls, doors, windows, rooms and furnishings placement and other functional spaces like staircase or hall walks.

What is the 2D Floor plan?

2D floor plan is a 2-dimensional drawing of the house floors with the view from above. Design of 2D floor plan simplifies house layout by using conventional symbols which are easy for readers to understand not only element positions and arrangement but also space area, wall scale, door size and simple materials or types such as floor tiles, staircase wood or sliding doors… In a 2D floor plan, room label and area figures are added for better information.

In short, the 2D floor plan was born to help viewers can have a good understanding of home layout easily and quickly.

There are two common purposes of the 2D Floor plan: residential and commercial. Besides, floor plans can be designed in plain format (grey, black and white) or colorful format to emphasize the physical patterns or space separation.

Pros:

2D Floor plan is used popularly because of its simple but clear drawing of house structure. Coming with it, the 2D Floor plan is easier to create and light to store and share in different devices. Hence, it can be seen as the most cost-effective choice.

Cons:

Because 2D floor plans are flat and offer only 1 view from the top, they reach their limits on delivering realistic visualization. For that purpose, a 3D floor plan is a better approach. 3D floor plan can provide more intricate details of house space and more options of view perspectives. It also creates a more vivid feeling on colors, materials and physical patterns in house interiors.

With mention above characteristics, the 2D floor plan is often combined with a 3D floor plan to present a comprehensive view of home space. Hence, the house buyers or house designers can make their decision quickly and appropriately.
